Oregon Cross Country:

There are many outstanding cross country clubs throughout Oregon that provide coaching and training opportunities for Oregon youth. We are fortunate to have so many active and supportive programs. However, many of our clubs share a similar weakness: due to lack of size, they are unable to provide team competition opportunities for their athletes. To do so, they must have at least five runners in any given age-group.

Since few clubs meet that requirement, Oregon Cross Country (OCC) was formed as umbrella organization so that athletes can unite and represent Oregon together in the Junior Olympics Association, Regional, and National Championships. OCC has enabled young athletes of Oregon to experience the team aspect of cross crountry, which includes achievement, camaraderie, sportsmanship and friendship.

Opportunity:
Joining OCC will not impact or interfere in any way with an athlete’s connection with his or her existing club, coach, or training group. These important relationships will not be affected. It merely provides a mechanism for unifying Oregon athletes at meets where team scoring occurs. During the Junior Olympic Championship meets, athletes advance not only based on individual performance, but also on team scoring. Up to eight runners on a team may advance from state to regionals and from regionals to nationals as a unit. Thus, OCC will enable more Oregon runners to advance to regional and national cross country competitions on the basis of team scoring.

Philosophy and Eligibility:
OCC was formed as a youth club, but is open to runners in all age divisions, including Youth, Open and Masters. There is no qualifying standard or ability requirement. To join, an athlete or parent needs to contact the Oregon Association (see join us) and make a request. The club number is 37-0930. This needs to be done prior to competing in any USATF sanctioned cross country meets.

Nuts & Bolts:
There is no membership fee to join OCC. Athletes who join will be provided team competition shirts at cost. Wearing the singlets during USATF sanctioned competitions will be required. Singlets are now in stock and will be delivered or mailed to those who need them. Meet info for the 2007 season is available at: USATF 2007 Youth XC Brochure.

Invitation:
The nucleus of OCC was originally established by a group of several Portland area coaches. But membership is open to all Oregonians, and OCC now has active members from Pendleton, Astoria, Hood River, Medford, Grants Pass as well as the Willamette Vally. We encourage athletes, parents and coaches to talk this over and see if OCC will meet their needs. Our goal is simply to enhance the opportunities of Oregon athletes. With your support and participation, we will achieve that goal. We also encourage adults to join and participate with us in the annual Fit Right NW Cross Country Series.
